That's why we're proud members of Sustainable Salons, a resource recovery programme that helps salons divert up to 95% of salon waste from landfill while supporting community initiatives across New Zealand and Australia.

Every appointment at The Avenue contributes to a more sustainable future by helping us recover, recycle, and repurpose materials that would otherwise end up as waste.

How We're Making a Difference

Recycling Salon Resources

Through Sustainable Salons, materials used every day in our salon are carefully sorted and collected for recycling, including:

• Aluminium foils
• Colour tubes
• Paper and cardboard
• Plastic packaging
• Razor blades
• Electrical tools and components
• Select salon disposables

Plastic packaging is sent to specialist recyclers where it is transformed into new products such as outdoor furniture, fencing, and packaging materials, helping keep valuable resources in circulation and out of our oceans.

Supporting Communities

Many of the materials we recycle generate funds that are donated to KiwiHarvest, helping provide meals for people in need throughout New Zealand.

Did you know? A full head of foils can help provide a quarter of a meal to someone experiencing food insecurity.

Giving Hair a Second Life

Hair is one of the salon industry's most valuable recyclable resources.

Hair clippings collected from our salon floor are used to create Hair Booms - innovative products that help absorb oil spills and protect waterways and coastlines. Hair is also repurposed for composting, community garden projects, and sustainability education initiatives.

Ponytail Donations

The Avenue proudly collects ponytails measuring 20cm or longer for donation through Sustainable Salons.

These ponytails are used to create wigs for people experiencing hair loss due to cancer treatment, alopecia, burns, and other medical conditions.

Sustainable Salons is currently the largest donor of ponytails in the Southern Hemisphere, helping thousands of people regain confidence during difficult times.

Chemical Recovery

Sustainable Salons is the first programme in the salon industry to safely recover and recycle excess salon chemicals.

Unused colour and chemical waste is collected and processed through specialist recycling facilities where it is neutralised and transformed into recycled water for use in roadworks and construction projects.

Creating Meaningful Employment

Through partnerships with organisations including the Endeavour Foundation, Sustainable Salons creates meaningful employment opportunities for people living with disabilities by supporting resource collection, sorting, and processing throughout the recycling network.

Making Sustainable Choices

As a Sustainable Salons member, we're encouraged to make environmentally conscious choices throughout the salon. Through the programme we have access to sustainable alternatives including:

• Biodegradable gloves
• Biodegradable towels
• Recycled toilet paper
• Sustainable coffee products
• Environmentally responsible salon supplies

Our Sustainable Impact

Together with Sustainable Salons and hundreds of participating salons across Australia and New Zealand, we're helping create meaningful environmental and social change.

To date, Sustainable Salons has:

• Diverted over 2.2 million kilograms of waste from landfill
• Recycled more than 722,000kg of paper
• Recycled more than 579,000kg of plastic
• Collected over 114,000kg of hair for environmental projects
• Safely recycled 88,000 litres of salon chemicals
• Helped provide 420,000+ meals to people in need
• Collected 294,000+ ponytails for wig-making programmes
